The conference, titled “Women in theater and theater by women in the Golden Age”<\/em>,<\/strong> will be presented by Morgane Kapp\u00e8s-Le Moing,<\/a> a renowned expert and associate professor in Hispanic studies at Jean Monnet University,<\/a> Saint-\u00c9tienne, and a member of the Institute of History of Representations and Ideas in Modernities (IHRIM).<\/a> Her research focuses on Spanish Golden Age literature, literary patronage, the relationship between literature and power, and the reception of Golden Age texts in German-speaking countries.<\/p>\n

What will you discover during this conference?<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

As shown by numerous European publications and recent symposiums, the relationship between women and theater sparks the curiosity of researchers today. Seventeenth-century Spain participated in this effervescence: its passion for theater created new spaces for female spectators, actresses, and playwrights.<\/p>\n

During this conference, we will begin by presenting Spanish Golden Age theater.<\/strong> We will cover the essential points of its poetics, defined in Lope de Vega\u2019s Arte Nuevo de Hacer Comedias<\/em>.<\/a> We will also discuss the material conditions of performances and focus on the corral de comedias<\/em> space.<\/a><\/p>\n

Following this introduction, we will explain the role of women in theater.<\/strong> We will see that the famous cazuela<\/em>, where women were traditionally confined, was actually a vibrant space, contrasting with the rigid image often associated with that era. We will note that despite moralists’ reservations, Golden Age Spain allowed actresses to take the stage and even direct theater companies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We will also delve into the contributions of female playwrights<\/strong>. These authors, who faced challenges in publishing and even more so in staging their works, developed a unique poetics where their \u201cvirtuous audacity,\u201d to borrow Mar\u00eda de Zayas\u2019s words,<\/strong><\/a> found expression. Finally, we will examine significant excerpts from plays written by women,<\/strong> concluding with how these works perfectly fit into the European context of their time.<\/p>\n
