January 18 is a key date in Latin American history: the anniversary of Lima’s foundation, the capital of Peru. Founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro,<\/strong> Lima is also known as\u00a0 \u00ab Ciudad de los Reyes \u00bb<\/strong><\/a> (“City of Kings”) in reference to Epiphany on January 6. This nickname reflects the cultural and religious influence of Spain in the region.<\/p>\n

A strategic foundation<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Francisco Pizarro chose the R\u00edmac Valley<\/a> for its strategic location: <\/strong>a fertile region near the Pacific coast, ideal for becoming an administrative and commercial hub. Lima quickly became the seat of the Viceroyalty of Peru,<\/strong><\/a> playing a key role in the Andean region.<\/p>\n

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, several advanced civilizations, such as the cultures Lima,<\/a> Ichma<\/a> et l\u2019empire Inca,<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0inhabited this area. These peoples built impressive agricultural and religious infrastructure, including the huacas,<\/em><\/strong><\/a> pyramidal adobe temples still visible today. The R\u00edmac River, \u00ab “the one who speaks” in quechua<\/a>,<\/strong> held deep spiritual significance for these populations.<\/p>\n

Francisco Pizarro: founder of Lima<\/h3>\n

Francisco Pizarro<\/a> (1478-1541),<\/strong> born in Trujillo, Spain, is renowned for his conquest of the Inca Empire.<\/strong> After capturing Emperor Atahualpa<\/strong><\/a> in 1532, ihe founded Lima in 1535 as the Spanish administrative center. However, internal tensions among conquistadors led to his assassination in 1541.<\/p>\n

Pizarro’s preliminary expeditions<\/h4>\n

– With Alonso de Ojeda<\/a> (1510) :<\/strong> Pizarro joined Ojeda to explore the coasts of Central America and Colombia.<\/strong> Though perilous, this expedition established initial Spanish contact in these regions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

– With Vasco N\u00fa\u00f1ez de Balboa<\/a> (1513) :<\/strong> Alongside Balboa, Pizarro participated in crossing the Isthmus of Panama, leading to the discovery of the Pacific Ocean.<\/strong> This achievement opened new commercial possibilities.<\/p>\n

– Complex Relations with Balboa and Pedrarias D\u00e1vila<\/a> :<\/strong> After discovering the Pacific, Pizarro aligned with Pedrarias D\u00e1vila, governor of Panama, aiding in Balboa’s arrest. This strategic choice secured support for his future endeavors.<\/p>\n

The capture of Atahualpa at Cajamarca (1532)<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

The decisive episode in Cajamarca, where Pizarro captured Atahualpa, marked the end of the Inca Empire’s<\/strong> independence and the beginning of Spanish colonization. This event is one of the themes discussed in our courses in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n

An ambush and monumental ransom<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Confident after his victory over his brother Hu\u00e1scar, Atahualpa agreed to meet Pizarro. However, what seemed like negotiations turned into an ambush.<\/strong> Despite being outnumbered, the Spaniards used firearms and horses to capture the emperor.<\/p>\n

Atahualpa offered an enormous ransom:<\/strong> filling two rooms with treasures, collecting about 6,000 kg of gold and 12,000 kg of silver. Despite this, he was executed in 1533,<\/strong> sealing the fate of the Inca Empire.<\/p>\n
