Describing an image in Spanish is about one thing: helping the other person \u201csee\u201d the scene. To do that, you need to separate three different ideas:\u00a0what exists<\/strong>\u00a0(hay<\/em>),\u00a0where it is<\/strong>\u00a0(est\u00e1\/est\u00e1n<\/em>), and\u00a0what someone\/something has<\/strong>\u00a0(tiene\/tienen<\/em>).<\/p>\n

When you describe, ask yourself these three questions (in this order):<\/p>\n

– What is there?<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0HAY + noun<\/strong>: you introduce new elements.
\nE.g.:\u00a0Hay tres personas. Hay una mesa.<\/em><\/p>\n

– Where is it \/ where are they?<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0EST\u00c1 \/ EST\u00c1N + place<\/strong>: you locate things in space.
\nE.g.:\u00a0La mesa est\u00e1 en el centro. Ellos est\u00e1n en un parque.<\/em><\/p>\n

– What does it have \/ what are they carrying?<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0TIENE \/ TIENEN + object\/feature<\/strong>: you add visible details.

Why French can say \u201cil y a la Tour Eiffel\u201d, but Spanish can\u2019t say \u201chay la Torre Eiffel\u201d<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

In French,\u00a0il y a<\/em>\u00a0can be followed by a\u00a0definite<\/strong>\u00a0noun phrase (il y a la Tour Eiffel, il y a le livre sur la table<\/em>). In Spanish, when\u00a0hay<\/em>\u00a0means \u201cthere exists \/ there is in a place\u201d, you usually present\u00a0new<\/strong>\u00a0information, so the noun normally appears\u00a0without<\/strong>\u00a0the definite article or with an\u00a0indefinite<\/strong>\u00a0(un\/una<\/em>) or quantifiers (mucho, muchos, varios\u2026<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The RAE summarizes it this way: in its existential meaning,\u00a0haber<\/em>\u00a0(hay \/ hab\u00eda<\/em>) does not allow\u2014except in special cases\u2014the\u00a0definite article<\/strong>, and sentences like\u00a0Hay las cartas en el buz\u00f3n<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Hab\u00eda el reloj sobre la mesa<\/em>\u00a0are considered ungrammatical.<\/p>\n

So how do you say it correctly with \u201cLa Tour Eiffel\u201d?<\/h3>\n

– To introduce what exists in a place (existence):<\/strong>
\n\u2705\u00a0En Par\u00eds hay una torre muy famosa.<\/em>\u00a0(you present something \u201cnew\u201d to the listener)<\/p>\n

– To locate something already known (location):<\/strong>
\n\u2705\u00a0La Torre Eiffel est\u00e1 en Par\u00eds.<\/em>\u00a0(this is not existence; it\u2019s location, so you use\u00a0estar<\/em>)<\/p>\n

– To use the proper name directly (very natural):<\/strong>
\n\u2705\u00a0En Par\u00eds est\u00e1 la Torre Eiffel.<\/em>\u00a0(estar<\/em>\u00a0+ place = location)<\/p>\n

A simple learner rule is: with\u00a0hay<\/em>, don\u2019t use\u00a0el\/la\/los\/las<\/em>. The RAE mentions \u201cspecial cases\u201d, but at A2\u2013B1 (and to avoid French interference) it\u2019s best to learn the strong rule first:
