In Spanish,\u00a0ser<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0estar<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0are not just two ways to say\u00a0to be<\/em>: each verb has a different job. Your choice changes what you are actually stating about a person, a place or a situation. Studies on French-speaking learners show that this distinction causes problems even at higher levels, and that many errors come from the\u00a0complexity of Spanish itself<\/strong> and from our tendency to simplify (using one \u201cgeneric\u201d verb everywhere). This is something we see every day in our Spanish classes in Strasbourg<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The RAE grammar explains that with\u00a0ser<\/strong>\u00a0we usually attribute\u00a0characterising properties<\/strong>\u00a0to the subject, independent of a particular situation, whereas with\u00a0estar<\/strong>\u00a0we talk about the subject\u2019s\u00a0states<\/strong>\u00a0at a given moment, often seen as temporary or resulting from something.<\/p>\n

– Es alto \/ es diestro \/ es mudo<\/em> (He is tall \/ he is right-handed \/ he is mute) \u2192 defining characteristic.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

– Est\u00e1 triste \/ est\u00e1 solo<\/em> (He is sad\/he is lonely) \u2192 current state.<\/p>\n

From here we can organise learning into two\u00a0routes<\/strong>\u00a0according to your level.<\/p>\n

Route 1 (A1\u2013A2): the essential core that always works<\/h2>\n

The goal here is a simple, reliable system for most everyday situations.<\/p>\n

\ud83e\udeaa SER = identity, profession, origin (what\/who is it?)<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Use\u00a0ser<\/strong>\u00a0to say who or what someone is: identity, job, nationality, type of thing.<\/p>\n

Route 2 (B2\u2013C1): the nuances that make you sound advanced<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

At B2\u2013C1, the goal is not just \u201cchoosing the right verb\u201d in isolated sentences, but using\u00a0ser<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0estar<\/strong>\u00a0to be precise: describing a photo for the DELE oral exam, sounding professional at work, avoiding ambiguity. Research on French-speaking learners shows that at B2 most errors concentrate around four areas:\u00a0events<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201clo est\u00e1\u201d<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cestar de\u201d<\/strong>, and\u00a0adjectives whose meaning changes with ser\/estar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

RAE grammar puts it this way:\u00a0estar<\/strong>\u00a0is the normal verb to locate something in space (\u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1s?<\/em>), but when we locate\u00a0actions or events<\/strong>\u00a0in space or time, we use\u00a0ser<\/strong>:\u00a0La reuni\u00f3n es aqu\u00ed.<\/em><\/p>\n

Two different questions:<\/p>\n

– \u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 el restaurante?<\/em><\/strong>Where is the restaurant? (place).<\/p>\n

– \u00bfD\u00f3nde es la reuni\u00f3n? <\/em><\/strong>Where is the meeting taking place? (event, something that \u201ctakes place\u201d).<\/p>\n

Useful examples :<\/strong><\/p>\n

– La oficina est\u00e1 en el centro \/ <\/em>The office is located in the city centre.<\/em> (building).<\/p>\n

– La reuni\u00f3n es en la sala 3 \/ <\/em>The meeting is taking place in Room 3. (meeting).<\/p>\n

– La conferencia es en el auditorio \/<\/em>The conference is taking place in the auditorium.<\/p>\n

– El examen es el viernes y es en esta clase \/<\/em>The examination will take place on Friday in this classroom.<\/p>\n

In photo descriptions, this allows you to differentiate between:<\/strong><\/p>\n

– The company is located in the city centre (if you are referring to the building).<\/p>\n

– The interview takes place in this office (if you are referring to the event you are imagining).<\/p>\n

Another advanced difficulty is using\u00a0lo<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0estar<\/em>: many learners understand it but rarely use it spontaneously.<\/p>\n

This is extremely useful in professional contexts: it sounds concise and natural.<\/p>\n

\ud83e\uddd1\u200d\ud83d\udcbc Stable profession vs temporary role: \u201cser\u201d vs \u201cestar de\u201d<\/h3>\n

Learners often over-extend \u201cprofession = ser\u201d and avoid\u00a0estar<\/strong>\u00a0for temporary roles.<\/p>\n

– Professional identity (ser):<\/strong>
\nEs m\u00e9dico.<\/em>\u00a0\/\u00a0Soy ingeniera –<\/em>He is a doctor. \/ I am an engineer.<\/p>\n

– Temporary role (estar de):<\/strong>
\nEst\u00e1 de camarero este verano –<\/em>He is working as a waiter this summer.

In a DELE photo, this helps you speak cautiously:<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udd00 Adjectives whose meaning changes: lexical pairs<\/h3>\n

Some adjectives change their meaning depending on whether they go with\u00a0ser<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0estar<\/strong>. These are best learned as\u00a0vocabulary pairs<\/strong>, not as a single rule.<\/p>\n

1. Listo<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Es listo<\/em> = intelligent\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

– Est\u00e1 listo<\/em> = ready.<\/p>\n

2. Verde<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Es verde<\/em> = colour.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Cerrado<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Estamos cerrados<\/em>\u00a0\/\u00a0La tienda est\u00e1 cerrada<\/em> = the shop is closed (state, now)\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

– Es cerrado<\/em> (d’esprit, de caract\u00e8re) = he\/she is closed, not open-minded.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

Advanced grammars stress that with\u00a0ser<\/strong>\u00a0we state a property perceived as \u201cnormal\u201d or inherent; with\u00a0estar<\/strong>\u00a0we describe a state seen as a deviation from that normal situation.<\/p>\n

– If you are talking about the situation \u2018in general\u2019, you will probably use ser<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

– If you are talking about the situation \u2018today\/now\u2019, you will probably use estar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

– Estar + participle = result \/ current state:

How to study this without getting stuck<\/h2>\n

Based on research conducted among French speakers, here is a strategy that works well:<\/p>\n

1. Do not learn 20 rules, but 2 or 3 key ideas<\/strong> per level.<\/p>\n

2. At an advanced level, work by areas of conflict,<\/em> not by endless lists:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Place vs event (it is in \/ it is at).<\/p>\n

– Lo est\u00e1 and estar de.<\/p>\n

– 6 to 8 pairs of adjectives + ser\/estar in actual usage (ready, green, closed, good, safe, etc.).<\/p>\n

3. Reuse set phrases<\/strong> aloud (A1-B1), then combine them in real contexts (B2-C1: mini-stories, office simulations, DELE<\/strong><\/a>-type tasks).<\/p>\n
