Spanish: a living language 2024

Today, learning Spanish is not just an enriching activity but also an investment in the future. According to the report Spanish: A Living Language 2024, Spanish continues to be one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with nearly 591 million people using it as a native language, a second language, or a foreign language. This represents 7.3% of the world population, making Spanish the second most spoken native language after Mandarin Chinese and the fourth most spoken language overall in terms of total speakers.

Interest in Spanish in France

In France, learning Spanish is on a positive trend. The country is among those with the highest number of Spanish students in the European Union, alongside Germany, Italy, and Poland. Currently, more than 3 million students in France are learning Spanish, making the country one of the main strongholds of the language in Europe.

This increase in interest is no coincidence. The expansion of Spanish in Europe is largely due to its cultural significance and its usefulness in the job market. Additionally, economic ties between Spanish-speaking countries and Europe have fostered the growth of Spanish in commercial and tourism sectors, where it is valued as a key communication tool.

The importance of learning Spanish in a globalized world

Beyond France, Spanish has seen significant growth in countries like the United States, Brazil, and several in Sub-Saharan Africa, where it is becoming an established language in local educational systems. Currently, more than 23 million people study Spanish as a foreign language, and this number is expected to keep growing in the coming years.

Learning Spanish also serves a practical purpose. Spanish is an official language in 21 countries and is one of the most widely used languages on the internet and social media, making it a gateway to new cultural experiences and extensive opportunities in the digital and professional world. Furthermore, the Hispanic community in the United States continues to be a major driver of the language’s growth, reinforcing the importance of learning Spanish for those seeking opportunities in the North American market.

Future outlook: Spanish will continue to expand

Although projections suggest moderate growth for Spanish in the long term, particularly in regions like Europe and Africa, the number of speakers will continue to increase until it reaches a peak of over 682 million users in 2066. After that, a slight decrease is expected, yet Spanish will maintain its relevance as one of the most spoken languages worldwide
